According to Muhammad Awaluddin (2009) in his article titled Palapa Ring (Palapa Ring Network System), the advantages of the Palapa Ring are:
(1) Has the competitiveness of countries access to Tier 1 (the United States, and Europe) through 3 (three) continents and 2 (two) ocean because it has the potential number of Internet users,
(2) With the infrastructure already built internet rates expected to be lower than at present, the original data communication to access Indonesia Internet Exchange (IIX) or the landing point of the network access provide (NAP) no longer need through Jakarta,
(3) Reducing the digital divide between communities, especially in the small towns that have not had broadband networks and support competitive opportunities and business prospects in underdeveloped areas Indonesia,
(4) Provide communication more efficient, safe, and highly broad range of public sector and government
(5) Reducing the cost of communication in the areas covered as well as encourage the use of broadband access and meet the needs of current and future telecommunications that depend on broadband networks.
Development of Palapa Ring can be seen from the eyes of technological determinism. The existence of this project would not exist without the discovery of so many technological advances that have been developed to date. If there is no fiber optic cable, Palapa Ring can not be planned and built so far. The demand for more effective communication and efficient are also influenced by technological developments. What was once considered sufficient, may be considered less in the digital age now. Used without any internet people can move well and are not disturbed, but because the Internet is widely known and used by the demand for fast Internet access and eventually arise to the surface evenly. To be able to meet all the demands associated with telecommunications Indonesia, built Palapa Ring.
The use of fiber-optic networks in Indonesia can be enhanced even further. Fiber optic himself superior to many of its qualities. Development of telecommunications infrastructure in Indonesia is also needed, especially for Eastern Indonesia region so it will be able to support aspects of life, such as education, health, defense, etc.. The development of this network should be supported so that the digital divide can be overcome and support government policy communication and information provision more efficient.
