The Role of Information and Communication Technology

Here is the Role of Information and Communication Technology on human life actually on education or e-education. Globalization trends have triggered shifts in education from the conventional face-to-face education toward a more open and flexible. Some experts have long predicted the changes in education. They include the following:

  1. Ivan Illich, the 70's said on "Education without school (Deschooling Socieiy)" is an extreme teacher is no longer needed.
  2. G. Bishop, in 1989 predicted that the future of education will be supple (flexible), open, and accessible to anyone who needs no age limit and previous educational experience.
  3. R. Mason, in 1994 argued that education will be more determined by the network of information that allows the interaction and collaboration ..
  4. Tony Bates, 1995 stated that the technology can improve the quality and range when used wisely for education and training, and has great significance for the economic well-being.
  5. Alisjahbana I., 1966, suggests that the approach to education and training will be "At that moment (Just on Time)", teaching techniques will be two-way, collaborative, and interdisciplinary.
  6. Romiszowski & Mason (1996) predicts the use of "Computer-based Multimedia Communication (CMC)" that are synchronous and asynchronous.

From the view of the experts above it can be concluded that with the influence of globalization, the future of education will be more open and two-way, diverse, multidisciplinary, and work productivity related to "the spot" and competitive. The trend of education in Indonesia in the future are:

  1. Development of open education by distance learning mode (Distance Learning). Easy to hold open and distance education has been a concern of government as a key strategy.
  2. Sharing resources between institutions of education / training in a network.
  3. Libraries and other educational instruments such as teachers and labs will change the function of a source of information.
  4. The use of interactive information technology devices, such as CD-ROM and Multimedia, in education gradually replace TV and Video.

With the development of information technology in education, it is possible to place a distance learning using the internet to connect between learners with educators, students see the value of online, financial checks, see the schedule of lessons, send the assigned task of educators and so on. A major factor in distance learning that is considered a problem is the lack of interaction between educators and learners. With the internet, it is possible to make the interaction between teachers and students in the form of real time (real time) or not. Through this form of real time can be done in a chatroom, direct interaction with real audio or real video, and online meetings. Forms of real time can not be done with mailing lists, discussion groups, newsgroups, and bulletin board. In the above interaction educators and learners in the classroom can be replaced, although not completely. Through the web, the forms of matter, exams, quizzes and other educational means can also be realized.
